About HERC
History
The Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC) was founded in the spring of 2000 by colleges and universities in Northern California that were seeking ways to collaborate on addressing faculty and staff dual career and employment outreach challenges on their campuses.
The resulting Northern California HERC has been viewed as a best practice by colleges and universities in other U.S. regions and since 2004, HERCs have developed in several other regions.
One of the regional HERCs primary functions is to maintain regional, web-based search engines that include listings for all job openings, both faculty and staff, at all member institutions. The services at the websites are available at no charge to anyone seeking employment in higher education. The centrality of job postings and regional resources as well as the website’s ability to accommodate dual career searches distinguishes HERC from other employment websites. Regional HERCs also hold regular meetings for human resources and faculty affairs administrators to encourage the sharing of information, resources, and best practices that support member institutions in attracting outstanding and diverse faculty, administrators, and staff.
Mission
In the spring of 2007, HERC established a national organization to help support the mission and objectives of the regional HERCs. The mission of the National HERC is to facilitate national strategic initiatives that help the regional HERCs accomplish their goals and to promote HERC-wide visibility. The mission of the regional HERCs is to advance the efforts of their member institutions to recruit and retain outstanding and diverse faculty and staff and to assist dual career couples.
The mission of the National HERC is fulfilled through the following objectives:
- Holding the intellectual property and being the custodian of the HERC brand
- Collecting program assessment data
- Developing national advertising, marketing, and partnerships
- Initiating cost savings for regional HERCs
- Providing a singular point of contact for new HERCs, vendors, and partners
- Streamlining regional efforts and communication
- Signing National HERC contracts
- Becoming the primary higher education job board
- Being a repository of best practices
Organizational Structure
The National HERC is a program of Tides Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The National HERC is governed by an Advisory Board that is comprised of the regional HERC Director, a member representative and a member representative alternate from each regional HERC and the National HERC Director serves as an ex officio member.
Each regional HERC is an independent entity that has entered into an affiliation agreement with the National HERC.
