Dr. Iwalani Else
Dr. Iwalani Else had lived in Hawaii all her life and worked at the University of Hawaii for 17 years as a faculty member. While greatly enjoying her academic work, she and her husband were interested in moving to a place where the cost of living and home ownership were more affordable. Since her husband Mark is from Minnesota and has family there, she decided to look for employment opportunities in Minnesota.
She quickly identified the Upper Midwest Higher Education Recruitment Consortium’s (HERC) website through a Google search. She found HERC to be an amazing resource to search higher education job listings in the state. It was through the website that she saw the posting for the position she has now as the Director of Institutional Research and Assessment with The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota.
Dr. Else has been warmly welcomed by her colleagues. What she enjoys most about her job is that the assessment work she does touches all areas of the college and she has an opportunity to work with and get to know almost everyone at St. Scholastica.
Being from Hawaii, all her family and friends said that she’d never last through a winter, but one of the things she loves about Minnesota is that people there enjoy every season to its fullest. Dr. Else has enjoyed experiencing the change of seasons and winter is one of her favorites – she particularly enjoys cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. “In fact,” she notes, “I’ve enjoyed more time outdoors, even in the winter, than I did in Hawaii. My husband and I enjoy being in Duluth – we were able to purchase our first home and have family here. For me, the lake and the hills remind me a lot of Hawaii and my new job is fun, challenging and very rewarding. I feel like I’m finally home.”
